The Research Note

Research only becomes useful when it turns into a product direction.

A seller can spend hours looking at search results, reviews, autocomplete phrases, bestseller pages, product gaps, and competitor listings without leaving with a better decision. The purpose of a research note is to stop that drift. It turns scattered observations into a short, usable direction for one product.

It does not need to be long or predictive. It only needs to make six things clear enough to act on: who the product is for, why the buyer may care, what demand signal supports the idea, what gap may exist, what safety issues must be avoided, and what original angle is worth developing.

Without this step, the seller may leave research with only a vague conclusion: "dog dad shirts sell," "nurse products are popular," "teacher appreciation is a good niche," or "slow runner shirts have demand." Those statements may be true, but they are not product directions.

A useful research note is more specific.

It might say:

"Partners buy funny Father's Day gifts for dog dads, but many visible products use similar paw print layouts and generic jokes. Create an original gift-driven product around the idea of treating the dog like a child, without copying existing phrases or layouts."

That note gives the seller something to work with. It identifies the buyer, the occasion, the demand reason, the possible gap, and the originality boundary.

It does not tell the seller to copy a bestseller. It gives the product a direction before design begins.

Table 2.5. The Research Note Framework

FieldWhat It ClarifiesExample
BuyerWho is buying or receiving the product?Spouse buying for a dog dad
Buying contextWhy or when does the purchase happen?Father's Day gift
Demand signalWhat suggests buyers may care?Search results show active dog dad gift products
Product gapWhat is missing or weak in current options? Many products use generic paw print humor
Safety notesWhat should be avoided? No copied phrases, no brand references, no competitor layouts
Product angleWhat original direction is worth developing?Funny gift shirt about treating the dog like a child

The framework is deliberately short. Its job is not to turn product creation into a slow corporate process. Its job is to make sure the seller does not move from research to design with only a broad niche and a vague feeling of opportunity.
