Chapter 1
The Growth Loop
Book navigation Browse the book
A Merch catalog grows through decisions, not through uploads alone.
Uploading creates the possibility of growth, but it does not create a growth system by itself. A product only becomes useful to the business when the seller can understand what it is supposed to prove, how the market responded, and what should happen next.
That is the purpose of the Merch growth loop. It gives the seller a simple way to think about the life of a product inside the catalog.
A product begins as an idea, but it should not remain an undefined listing forever. It should move through a sequence of decisions: create, position, test, classify, graduate, and scale.
Growth is not the act of publishing more products. Growth is the process of turning product behavior into better decisions.
The loop does not guarantee that every product will succeed. It does something more useful: it prevents every product from being treated the same.
A weak product can stop receiving paid traffic. A seasonal product can be saved for the right window. An underexposed product can receive a cleaner test. A promising product can be watched for repeatability. A proven product can be moved into a structure where it has room to grow.
Table 1.2. The Merch Growth Loop
| Stage | What It Means | Main Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Create | The seller develops a product idea. | Is the idea worth turning into an offer? |
| Position | The product is shaped around buyer, angle, product type, listing, and timing. | Is the product clear enough to publish or test? |
| Test | The product receives organic exposure, paid exposure, or both. | Has the market produced useful evidence? |
| Classify | The product is assigned a role based on its behavior. | Is it untested, promising, proven, seasonal, underexposed, organic-only, or no-budget? |
| Graduate | A product with evidence is moved into a cleaner structure. | Does it deserve better organization or a more controlled test? |
| Scale | A proven product receives more controlled opportunity. | Can volume increase without breaking the economics? |
The loop is simple, but it changes how the seller reads the catalog. Instead of seeing each product as a finished upload, the seller sees it as something moving through a decision path.
