Product Roles and Product Stages

Not every product in a Merch catalog is supposed to do the same job.

A common mistake is to treat every upload as if it has only two possible outcomes: it sells, or it fails. That view is too limited for a large Amazon Merch on Demand catalog.

A product can be new, untested, underexposed, seasonal, promising, proven, organic-only, or no longer worth paid traffic. Each of those situations requires a different decision.

When a seller does not separate those roles, the catalog becomes hard to manage.

A product with no impressions may be treated as a loser, even though it was never shown to shoppers. A product with one lucky sale may be scaled too aggressively before it proves repeatability. A seasonal design may be judged during the wrong month. A proven product may remain buried inside a messy structure because the seller never identified it as ready for graduation.

Every product does not need to win, but every product needs a role.

A product role is not a permanent identity. It is a management label. It tells the seller how to think about the product right now and what kind of action should come next. The same product may move from one role to another as it gathers evidence.

For example, a new dog dad shirt may move through several roles:

  • It may begin as an untested product.
  • If it receives almost no exposure inside a broad campaign, it may become an underexposed product that deserves a cleaner test.
  • If it gets one order, it may become promising.
  • If it earns repeated orders with acceptable economics, it may become proven.
  • If it works only near Father's Day, it may need a seasonal role even if it performs well during that window.

The point is not to label products for organization alone. The point is to prevent the wrong action.

A seller should not scale an untested product as if it were proven. A seller should not abandon an underexposed product as if it had failed. A seller should not force paid traffic onto a product that already received a fair test and did not convert.
